this lovely courtroom sketch by mona shaffer edwards depicts what i consider an overwhelmingly unfortunate moment (for lindsay AND all of us). so the girl has made some mistakes in her life… are you trying to pretend like you’re free of screw ups? the thing is that she’s clearly battling addiction, and that’s a tough fight for sure, but it’s pretty crappy how instead of trying to be a lil compassionate about it we’re dragging her through the mud and putting it all on display.
in the court of public opinion she’s already been tried and executed, because once you get you get anything negative about a person in to the news there is no going back. you’re a pariah for life. this is more than a touch unfair/hypocritical of us because really.. are you about to pretend like you’ve never made any mistakes?
when i fuck something up, i’m pretty quick to own up to it (which, she did). however, when you or i make a mistake are they put in bold type and run as headlines around the globe? it may feel that way but is it really at the kind of scale that is her reality where you just have no one to trust (if there’s a tabloid willing to pay, you got friends and family willing to make a buck off your shame) so you’re left with your old demons. if all anyone thinks she’s capable of being is a drug addict then that’s the easiest sort of character for her to default to. you wonder why it is that we have rates of recidivism.
have you ever done something you regret and are you defined by that error forever?
