suicidal thoughts plague many members of the gay community and is unfortunately a leading cause of death among all teenagers in this country. there are preventative efforts like the trevor project, but the body count continues to rise. the recent death of an indiana teen, billy lucas has inspired the queer community to address the issue. in his recent column, dan savage wrote:
“He reportedly endured intense bullying at the hands of his classmates — classmates who called him a fag and told him to kill himself. I wish I could have talked to this kid for five minutes. I wish I could have told Billy that it gets better. But gay adults aren’t allowed to talk to these kids. Schools and churches don’t bring us in to talk to teenagers who are being bullied. Why are we waiting for permission to talk to these kids? We have the ability to talk directly to them right now.”
and so it begins… savage launched the It Gets Better Project on YouTube to encourage gay and lesbian adults to send a message of hope to troubled young people. the videos and stories are pouring in. maybe it’s about time some of you vloggers join the cause?
