josé julio sarria, gay latino who ran for public office in 1961 - many many years before harvey milk
he ran for the san francisco board of supervisors and almost won by default, until people noticed there was a gay man running and immediately submitted everyone possible for the position. he didn’t win, but he still got 6000 votes, which shocked conservatives
he was also a drag queen popular at many of the balls at the time…and he still does it today (lookin good for a guy in his late 80s)!
It’s so funny how White “Queerstorians” conveniently never tell us about this beautiful querido right here. <3
Know your full queer, not-whitewashed, history!
[Image description: Photo one is a black and white photo of Sarria that appears to be from the 1960s, he’s wearing a light-colored strapless gown, dangling earrings, a long necklace and gold bracelet, and is combing his hair while looking into a hand mirror. Photo two is a formal portrait of Sarria in dark suit and tie, as candidate for San Francisco Supervisor. Photo three is Sarria in the present, in a red updo wig, with a rhinestone tiara, and a red gown with matching embroidered jacket, long necklaces, one with an elaborate rhinestone pendant, long dangling earrings and a shade of red lipstick matching the gown flawlessly.]

Please hang on to your submissions for a bit! I’m going to shut down that option while I sort through the 800 I have in my ask box right now
Thank you so much for all of the submissions and helping me keep the blog running!!! I’m just worried that at this rate I won’t be able to get to most of them ahh
I’m so ready….
Harvey Milk was a tremendously inspiring figure in my life and his words motivated me to become involved in some of the work I do. I remember learning about him as a teenager, awe by his charm and candor.. and all that he was able to achieve. I could clearly see the value of public affairs and PR campaigns. His legacy is impressive and continues to grow. It’s something I think about occasionally while I push my agenda along… watching my manifesto spread through the masses.
Unrelated Thought: This is what they served today at The White House to celebrate Harvey’s Birthday and unveil his US postage stamp. I’m going to admit that when you hear the President of the United States say, “Bring out the Birthday Cake!” you really expect something that looks more worthy of a Food Network special, versus a grocery store sheet cake. Nonetheless.. it is still a sweet victory for Harvey. He can tell his critics to EAT IT.
The last time I saw Lynda Carter was on set when she was taping an episode of Drag U. She had a great time joking around with the drag queens off camera. I remember Carmen Carrera and my intern were most excited to get a chance to meet Lynda.. actually, I remember I posted a pic here. Nonetheless I love that her fans have driven so much traffic to this interview.. that’ll make a nice payout for me. Thanks Lynda!
GPOY - COVERGURL
A day before protesters in Kiev knocked down a statue of Vladimir Lenin, an unnamed Ukrainian man took a seat on a makeshift stool in front of a blue piano in the middle of a rainy street. Time stopped for a moment. All eyes and ears were fixed on the man as he serenaded a wall of riot police with a Chopin song. As the Ukraine descends into political turmoil, this small act reminds us of our humanity
According to Anastasiia Bereza, the woman who posted this photograph on her Facebook page, the pianist attempted to stop the protest by charming the police with a combination of classical music and folk songs. Bereza stated in her description that the pianist was employing the “warm ocean strategy,” a peaceful protest movement brewing amongst young Ukrainians that stresses the need to be “soft but powerful.”
GPOY - with Andrew Christian in Palm Springs. This is from a party I had a few weeks ago at Hunter’s Nightclub. He and his partner have a house nearby. You can see pics from a house party there.. or read a convo I had with him for tourism awhile back
